We are pleased to invite members to our upcoming ICCM South Wales Branch Meeting, which will take place on Friday 12th June at the historic Cyfarthfa Castle, Brecon Road, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8RE. Following the meeting (at 2 pm) we will undertake a visit to Aberfan Cemetery, offering time for reflection at one of Wales’ most significant memorial sites.
The meeting provides an excellent opportunity to connect with colleagues, share best practice and discuss key developments within the sector.
The meeting will be kindly sponsored by the Columbaria Company who will have some exhibits to showcase to attendees.
Cyfarthfa Castle – A Brief History
Cyfarthfa Castle, an iconic landmark of Merthyr Tydfil, was built between 1824 and 1825 for the Crawshay family, prominent ironmasters who played a key role in the industrial development of the town. Designed in a grand Gothic Revival style, the castle symbolised the wealth and influence generated during the height of the iron industry in South Wales.
In the early 20th century, the castle was gifted to the people of Merthyr Tydfil and has since served as a school, museum, and art gallery. Today, it stands as an important cultural and historical asset reflecting the area’s industrial heritage.
Aberfan Cemetery – A Place of Remembrance
The visit to Aberfan Cemetery offers an opportunity to reflect on the tragic events of 21 October 1966, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the village of Aberfan. The disaster resulted in the loss of 144 lives, including 116 children from Pantglas Junior School.
The cemetery includes the Aberfan Memorial Garden, where many of the victims are laid to rest. It is maintained as a place of quiet remembrance and stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety, community responsibility, and respect within our profession.
We hope this meeting will be both professionally valuable and personally meaningful. The combination of a historic venue and a reflective visit reinforces the importance of our work and the legacy of those we serve.
