I have pleasure in inviting all members to the next South East Branch meeting. It will be held at Brompton Cemetery, London, SW10.
Brompton Cemetery, located in West London, is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries established in the 19th century to address overcrowding in London’s parish burial grounds.
Originally run by the West London and Westminster Cemetery Company, it became one of the few cemeteries to be taken over by the state—specifically by the Crown, in 1852. Now managed by The Royal Parks, it is the only cemetery in the UK under royal ownership.
The cemetery is notable for its grand central avenue, colonnades, and Great Circle, and it houses over 35,000 monuments. It serves as the final resting place for many notable figures, including suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, inventor Sir Henry Cole, and Doctor John Snow, whose groundbreaking research linked cholera outbreaks to contaminated water, revolutionising public health practices.
Brompton Cemetery is not only a burial ground but also a public green space, rich in Victorian heritage, wildlife, and community use, making it a unique blend of history, nature, and culture in modern London.
The meeting will open with a talk on the history of the cemetery delivered by Emma Sparre-Newman, Cemetery Services and Business Development Manager and a tour of the grounds is also included.
