ICCM Responds to David Fuller Inquiry: Calls for Independent Regulation and Reaffirms Commitment to the Dignity of the Deceased<\/strong><\/p>\n The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) welcomes the publication of the Phase 2 report of the David Fuller Inquiry and acknowledges its profound implications for all those who come into contact with the deceased, including professionals across our sector.<\/p>\n As the UK\u2019s largest membership organisation representing cemetery and crematorium professionals, the ICCM stands fully behind the call for independent regulation of mortuary and post-mortem practices. We believe such oversight should extend to all facilities where the deceased are held prior to cremation or burial \u2014 including ‘hold over’ areas that exist within crematoriums and cemetery grounds.<\/p>\n The care and dignity of the deceased must remain paramount. While our sector already operates with a deep sense of responsibility and respect, the findings of the Inquiry rightly challenge us to go further.<\/p>\n In particular, the ICCM recognises and takes seriously the Inquiry’s conclusion that the sector has shown a reluctance to “think the unthinkable.” This must change. We cannot allow discomfort to prevent necessary scrutiny or improvement. The ICCM is committed to working proactively with government and partners across the profession to ensure systems are in place that both protect the deceased and reassure the public.<\/p>\n Mathew Crawley, Chief Executive of ICCM, said: \u201cThis report must be a turning point. The public has the right to expect the highest standards of care for those who have died. While the overwhelming majority of those working in cemeteries and crematoriums act with professionalism and compassion, progress in independent regulation is now essential.
