Dear Members,<\/p>\n
The Government has today issued a statement setting out its intention to bring forward comprehensive proposals for the formal regulation of the funeral sector, following the sentencing of Robert Bush of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull.<\/p>\n
The Department of Health and Social Care will lead this work alongside the Ministry of Justice and other government departments, with the aim of driving up standards, strengthening oversight and protecting bereaved families.<\/p>\n
We support measures that provide stronger safeguards for bereaved families and ensure that every person who has died is treated with dignity, care and respect.<\/p>\n
It is important that any future regulatory framework recognises the existing responsibilities and standards across the wider bereavement sector and considers how these can work together effectively.<\/p>\n
We particularly welcome the Government\u2019s commitment to work with bereaved families, funeral providers, faith groups, local authorities and other stakeholders as proposals are developed. Meaningful engagement with those working within the sector will be essential to ensuring that any new requirements are proportionate, practical and effective.<\/p>\n
The Government has also confirmed that the Law Commission will review the criminal law relating to the deceased, consider gaps in existing legal protections and make recommendations about whether new offences are required.<\/p>\n
We will continue to engage constructively with the Government and other stakeholders as this work progresses. We will ensure that the views and experiences of our members are represented, while continuing to promote high professional standards and the importance of dignity, respect and care for the deceased and those who are bereaved.<\/p>\n
The Government has stated that detailed proposals and timetables for implementation will be published in due course. We will keep members informed as further information becomes available.<\/p>\n
